All I hear on the news lately is talk about jobs, we need them, they are going away, obama is going to make millions of them with a trillion dollars, etcs… But, what is a job and why do we need them? I still have yet to find someone who can really answer those questions…
Well let us start with the dictionary... Webster has a lot of definitions for “Job” such as “plastic surgery for cosmetic purposes” or “an undertaking that requires unusual exertion”; but the definition I think that fits the best for its use in the mainstream media is “a small miscellaneous piece of work undertaken on order at a standard rate.”
The reason I picked this definition is that people want to be told what to do and want to walk out of work with no responsibilities. If they are not getting paid they are not thinking about work; it’s something they get paid 8 hours a day to do and anytime past 40 in a week they should be compensated time and a half. I find this contrary to what I think work is about… I have what I consider a position.. which doesn’t really have a definition I like.. but contrary to a “job” it is a responsibility within the company I work. When it comes down to my responsibility the buck stops at me… and I have to make decisions… and think about things after 4-5pm and put in the extra hours to finish what needs to be done.
This leads in to the need for good education… but I think I need to complain about the current education before I finish this...
